Accurate. Safe. Advanced.

The Hive uses advanced technology to remotely operate an integrated supply chain that runs from pit to port. The delivery of remote operations from the Hive is a key part of Fortescue’s strategy, optimising and evolving our operations as we pave the way to Real Zero.

Ground Control

The Perth-based team at the Hive oversees multiple operations, including autonomous mining equipment, train controls, technical services, scheduling and planning, and energy operations.

Additionally, our magnetite mine at Iron Bridge is controlled from the Hive.

Technology and Innovation

Shaping the Next Generation of Mining Operations

  • Autonomous Haulage System (AHS)

Fortescue is pioneering the integration of AHS, with 200 autonomous haul trucks currently operating across the Pilbara. These autonomous vehicles, all remotely managed from Fortescue’s integrated operations Hive in Perth, help enhance safety, improve operational efficiency, and reduce costs. Fortescue was one of the earliest adopters of AHS in the mining industry, and today, it boasts one of the largest fleets globally, setting new benchmarks in automation within the sector.

  • AI in Operations

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly valuable to Fortescue’s operations, unlocking significant time and cost savings. By automating routine tasks and removing manual processes, AI empowers our teams to focus on higher-level problem-solving and decision-making. Tools such as schedule optimisation software, chatbots, and AI-driven product design are examples of how this technology is used to enhance operational efficiency.

  • Safety and Scheduling Innovations

At the Hive, advanced AI functions are integrated into Fortescue’s process control systems to continuously monitor for hazards and take corrective actions when necessary. Additionally, these systems optimise the scheduling of critical tasks, such as in-loading operations, by synchronising train control and scheduling decisions. This ensures that the right resources are deployed at the right time, improving operational efficiency and safety.

Zero Emissions by 2030
