Christmas Creek is the second mine in Fortescue’s Chichester Hub. Home to Fortescue’s Green Energy Hub, this site pilots several green energy projects designed to support decarbonisation of operations.
The mine also boasts two ore processing facilities. The first is a dual fed facility, where ore can be supplied by the primary crusher and our new Hall Hub crusher and overland conveyor belt, transporting higher-grade ore from over 14km away.
The second processing plant contains our Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separators (WHIMS) plant. This plant uses powerful magnets to extract iron ore from a slurry of crushed rock and water, recovering an additional 10% of ore compared to traditional processing methods.

As the home of our Green Energy Hub and Green Metal Project, Christmas Creek is a key driver in eliminating our carbon emissions. The renewable innovations refined and produced here are marked steps forward in our race to Real Zero.
The Hub combines a liquified and gaseous hydrogen production plant and refuelling station, and test and trial grounds for prototype equipment developed by Fortescue team.
Christmas Creek is also home to our Green Metal Project which represents a step forward in our ambition to produce green metal at a commercial scale in the Pilbara, with first production anticipated in 2025. A 60MW solar farm powers daytime operations at the Chichester Hub (consisting of our Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek sites). This displaces around 100 million litres of diesel every year.
To decarbonise our operations, we continuously test and trial sustainable technologies at our Green Energy Hub. This includes prototypes such as an Offboard Power Unit (OPU), our battery electric haul truck prototype ‘Roadrunner’, and our 3MW heavy mobile fast charger.
Real Zero is our plan to eliminate our scope 1 and scope 2 emissions across our Australian iron ore operations, without voluntary carbon offsets. For the benefit of our planet, our shareholders, and future generations.
Our Metals business includes iron ore operations in the Pilbara and exploration projects across the globe, spanning sites from Australia to Latin America and Gabon.
