Heavy Haul Railway

Our heavy haul railway covers 760 km of track, from our operations at Christmas Creek, Cloudbreak, Solomon and Eliwana to Port Hedland. It is one of the fastest heavy haul lines in the world.

Each of our 17 trains carries around 35,000 tonnes of iron ore across the Pilbara.

Herb Elliott Port Facility

Our Herb Elliott Port Facility at Anderson Point is capable of safely and efficiently exporting more than 190Mtpa of iron ore to customers around the world.

Designed to complement our port infrastructure, our fleet of eight  Fortescue Ore Carriers - with 260,000 tonne capacity each - delivers approximately 10 per cent of our total shipping requirements.

Decarbonisation at Port Hedland

Our decarbonisation journey is well advanced at Port Hedland, with green rail and shipping operations underway.
  • Battery Electric Light Vehicles

Battery-electric light vehicles and support mining equipment are currently being trialled in Port Hedland, offering zero emissions alternatives to traditional mining equipment.

  • Battery-Electric Rail

Two battery-electric locomotives have been prototyped and are currently undergoing trials on our mainline rail. By 2027 these trains will be in production, on track for our zero emissions rail solutions to be in place by 2030.

  • Green Shipping

Fortescue has successfully created the world’s first green ammonia-powered shipping vessel, The Green Pioneer. Our ambition is to convert all of our shipping and towage vessels to green fuel systems by 2030 as part of our zero emissions target.

Zero Emissions by 2030

Real Zero is our plan to eliminate our scope 1 and scope 2 emissions across our Australian iron ore operations, without voluntary carbon offsets. For the benefit of our planet, our shareholders, and future generations.
